Dr. Peter Schmidt, President and Chief Scientific Officer, at Rho

Dr. Peter Schmidt is President and Chief Scientific Officer, at Rho, a contract research organization that designs and manages the complex process of bringing a drug from its design stage in the laboratory to FDA approval. Dr. Schmidt joined Rho in 2022 to oversee the NIH portfolio and help build the Parkinson’s disease program and has been promoted to President after success in those domains. Prior to joining Rho, Dr. Schmidt was the vice dean at the top 50-ranked medical school at East Carolina University, the second medical school in the UNC system, and I’ve had academic appointments in biochemistry, public health, and he is currently an adjunct professor of Neurology at NYU. In addition to leading trials internationally, Dr. Schmidt has been a member of national and international committees and panels focused on neurology research and clinical care, for the Department of Defense, DARPA, Medicare, and for a program to improve Parkinson’s care in Europe. For ten years, Dr. Schmidt was Chief Research Officer for the Parkinson’s Foundation. He has led both bench and clinical research in movement disorders including the first work to establish enhanced Parkinson’s risk in people infected with COVID-19. Trained as an applied mathematician at Harvard and Cornell, Dr. Schmidt has received approximately $65 million in grant funding from NIH, PCORI, and private foundations.
